Italian Honey Bees

Gentle, productive, and well-suited for new and experienced beekeepers alike.

Italian Bees 01

Overview

Italian honey bees are our most popular line for beginners and hobbyists. Known for their calm temperament and steady buildup, they are a dependable choice for backyard and small-scale beekeeping.

Under proper handling and light smoke, Italian colonies are typically manageable and forgiving. They are protective of their brood—as all healthy colonies should be—but are widely regarded as one of the gentlest commonly available honey bee lines.

Temperament

Italian bees are generally calm during routine inspections.

With appropriate handling:

  • Minimal smoke is often sufficient
  • Feeding and light brood checks are typically manageable
  • Beginners can build confidence with proper protective gear

They are still bees and will defend their colony if mishandled. Technique and management matter more than label alone.

Production & Growth

Italian colonies are known for:

  • Strong spring buildup
  • Consistent brood production
  • Good honey yields when forage is available
  • Clean hive behavior

Honey production is ultimately dependent on nectar flow and environmental conditions. No bee line can produce surplus honey without adequate resources.

Climate Considerations

Originating from the Mediterranean region, Italian bees perform well in warm and temperate climates. They maintain active brood nests and may consume more stores in cooler regions where tighter winter clustering is beneficial.

In Texas and similar climates, they adapt well when properly managed.

Mite Management

Some Italian lines incorporate VSH (Varroa Sensitive Hygiene) traits, which can contribute to improved colony health.

However, all honey bees remain susceptible to mites.

We recommend:

  • Regular mite monitoring
  • Treating when thresholds are exceeded
  • Avoiding assumptions based on lineage alone

Responsible management remains essential.

Our Italian Stock

We source queens from established breeders known for selecting:

  • Gentle temperament
  • Productivity
  • Brood quality
  • Overall colony health

Many of these lines trace back to historic Parks family stock, continued today by breeders such as Wooten Queens and other reputable operations.

By introducing high-quality Italian genetics each year, we strengthen both our apiaries and the local gene pool with calm, productive stock.

Who Should Choose Italians?

Italian bees are ideal for:

  • New beekeepers
  • Backyard settings
  • Those prioritizing gentle temperament
  • Beekeepers who prefer lighter protective gear for routine work

As always, keep protective equipment nearby. It is easier to remove a veil than to put one on after bees become defensive.
